Our most recent commission has provided us with the opportunity to design a Playscape and Restorative garden for The Riley Behavioral and Educational Center in Huntsville Alabama.

Located at an independent living/retirement village, The Courtyard Garden at Redstone Village is not just a therapeutic garden in name only. Working alongside our talented friends at The Fockele Garden Center from Gainesville, Georgia, 4Site created the garden to be a place of respite where residents can reconnect with nature. It offers easy pedestrian access, the soothing sound and sight of moving water, places to sit and rest, places for solitude, and space for gatherings with family and friends. Most importantly, its plant mix includes both familiar plants that everyone loves along with unusual plants that add interest to the garden.

It has always been commonplace that a beautiful garden restores the body and the soul, but now that proposition has been proven empirically in many rigorous scientific studies. If any further proof is needed, it can be found at the Courtyard Garden at Redstone Village.

Features of the Courtyard Garden include:

Each project is unique on its own with a vision that comes from a collaborative effort between our designers, project owners, and craftsmen. While having the capability and vision to design and execute larger scale projects, frequently we are called upon to focus on a specific aspect or key element and are experienced in participating as part of a larger broader based design team. As we are not only a design firm, but actively install our creations, we understand the nuances of even the smallest details, which many times become the most important part of a finished project.

Garden Décor – A collection

Having incorporated authentic sculptural elements into our gardens over the past several years, AguaFina is pleased to make available our unique architectural elements, accents and stone. Our collection includes hand carved sculptures, functional art, fountains, traditional Japanese lanterns, found artifacts, reclaimed antique pavers, and other specialty stone items. This includes custom commissioned pieces, sculptural design/fabrication and sourcing of select materials. We regularly collaborate with other designers and are available for assistance with installation and implementation techniques, including structural support and water feature hydraulics. Installation services are available nationally and internationally.

We are particularly interested in working directly with clients who have an overriding dedication to providing the best possible healing environments for their patients and residents, in a manner that will, ideally, have a beneficial effect on the environment. We are dedicated to the sustainability of our projects, both in terms of environmental impact and long-term operating cost.

While we consider our talents and skills second to none, we strongly believe that our designs must first and foremost provide, in the best way possible, for the needs of our clients.

We have three hospital projects currently underway in 2011; Cottage Hospital’s main campus in Santa Barbara, Cottage Health System’s Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital, and Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, California. All of these developments include generous outdoor areas devoted to patients, visitors and staff, with peaceful settings for enjoyment o f the outdoors in secure surroundings. Accessible healing garden

This garden provides residents with access down a steep embankment to the existing ponds. A large waterfall and stream, overlooks, and seating are integrated through the landscape terraces to complement the pathways and performance patio. In addition to use by the residents of Hubbard Hill, this garden is open to the public and will accommodate community events and activities.

The outdoor therapy garden is directly accessed from the PT gym to provide opportunity to therapeutically traverse common outdoor obstacles with staff. Raised beds of sitting and standing heights, various seating opportunities and hand rails encourage people of all abilities to enjoy the ample surrounding landscape.

Neighborhood patios feature shade structures, looped pathways, water features, a rich landscape and more to provide a variety of experiences and choices for residents.

We have extensive experience in a wide variety of healthcare projects from campus site planning to detailed evidence-based therapeutic garden design. We work closely with our clients, staff, and medical practitioners to develop restorative outdoor environments and settings for Horticultural Therapy as a value-added medical service.

The healing and non-healing effects of our environment have long been appreciated by ancient cultures, yet are rarely apparent in contemporary design and development. We strive to address the healing benefits of the environment with every project that we work on.

The firm’s interest in Healing Gardens and restorative spaces is related to a personal story. Carter van Dyke’s mother was a patient at St. Mary Medical Center. As he accidentally met a family friend whose mother was also hospitalized at St. Mary Medical Center, the two of them decided to develop a small garden to show their appreciation to the hospital and its staff. The project soon expanded and the challenge to transform was initiated, creating the non-profit organization Friends of the Healing Gardens, which raised funds for Cloister Garden, the first outdoor space at the core of the 53-acre St. Mary Medical Center. What started as a simple commemorative garden has become the core of a plan to entirely transform a medical center with self-sustaining, community-financed healing gardens. The original Friends of the Healing Gardens evolved with the Hospital’s Women’s Auxiliary into the more-encompassing St. Mary Community League, which initiated and funded installation of other gardens, such as the Cancer Center Garden and Green Roof, and is currently in progress of building the Canticle Garden at the off-site St. Mary LIFE facility for elderly.

Together, Principals John Copley and Lynn Wolff offer over fifty years of professional experience in landscape architecture and planning. Overlooking historic Boston Common, the office is comprised of eight landscape architects, planners, architects and graphic designers.

CWDG’s project portfolio includes: the I-93 Central Artery/Tunnel Surface Restoration through downtown Boston, the Rose Kennedy Greenway Wharf Park, the Frog Pond Renovation Project in the Boston Common, the landmark fountain at the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Boston Children’s Museum Wharf Park Design, and Science Park at the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, Vermont.

CWDG, with Spaulding’s support designed this therapeutic trail so patients could practice a variety of real world challenges within a safe and controlled environment.

The primary trail is a relatively level, six foot wide concrete walkway with staggered stainless steel handrails which will provide support opportunities during therapy if required. As the path continues, it begins to undulate and patients encounter increased walk slopes (1-3%) requiring greater skill and stamina to traverse. Interpretive markers, similar to those used on the perimeter walkway are located within the trail. The markers are used as 50’ distance markers for those testing their mobility or for cognitive skill development for those recovering from stroke or brain injuries.

Secondary paths are located off the main trail and provide a safe environment for individuals to train and further test their recovery on a variety of walking surfaces that will be encountered outside the hospital setting. The paths materials include, a wood boardwalk, crushed stone, field stone with stone dust joints and field stone field stone with mortared joints. They also include more aggressive challenges – granite stairs, six inch granite curb with paving on both sides, 4.9% sloped walk and a 1:12 ramp with handrails. Interactive, spinning rock elements have been incorporated along the trail for upper body conditioning and tactile, sensory opportunities.

Respite garden
The intent of this “pocket park” was to create a respite from the stresses of the hospital workplace and to provide quiet surroundings where hospital staff and people visiting patients might come to reflect. The area was subdivided into two small pocket parks, complete with seating, public art, and shade tolerant plant materials that provide year-round interest and a food source for urban wildlife. Complementary paving patterns and materials were used to make the space cohesive and to link new construction with existing structures.

The therapeutic interior courtyard / atrium features a unique colored concrete spiral paving pattern, drawing users to the center of the space. Lighting, seatwalls, and colorful plantings combine to make a vibrant space for patients and employees to enjoy.

Jack is co-editor and contributing writer to the recently published book “Re-creating Neighborhoods for Successful Aging.” Other book contributions include “Complimentary and Alternative Medicine for Older Adults” and “Interaction by Design.” As a contributing writer for national publications, he has written numerous articles on connecting people with nature. Jack actively works to promote the design and development of Therapeutic Gardens and landscapes through speaking engagements, audio-conferences and contributing to the publication of technical papers. He is an adjunct faculty member at Temple University teaching “Healing Garden Design” and “Introduction to Horticultural Therapy”. He is also an instructor at the Chicago Botanic Garden School of Healthcare Garden Design Certificate Program. This new destination on the hospital campus adds a unique dimension to the healing power of the Cancer Treatment Center. The Cancer Center, located along the Buffalo Creek, is adjacent to a federally regulated wetland that functions as biofiltration for seven acres of stormwater runoff from surrounding paved areas. This dynamic hydrologic system was re-visioned as a garden space for patients, families and staff. New accessible boardwalks, a bridge, a restored stream channel, restored wetland, a retrofitted biocell, and a native grassland meadow now populate this once barren wilderness. This arrival sequence renovation for a busy regional hospital enhances pedestrian and vehicular accessibility, comfort and experience. New shaded arrival and seating areas, generous benches, pedestrian scale lighting, and lush plantings combine to create a welcoming and unified look. Special attention to pavement types, texture and color cues provide additional safety, way-finding and orientation features separating vehicle and pedestrian traffic in this busy entry. This award-winning Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro administrative campus was designed to align with the organization's mission of access, comfort and care. The central landscape element is a richly planted and flexible terrace space visible and accessible from training and conference rooms and sited within the context of a native meadow. Additional intimately scaled terraces and walkways with native, low maintenance planting of intense seasonal interest provide contemplative areas for daily use by visitors and staff. The spaces are designed to combine for tenting during large fundraising and memorial functions. The dramatic backdrop of the adjacent historic industrial mill and native meadow on this brownfield site, served as inspiration for the native low-maintenance planting palette. Additionally, we look for opportunities to incorporate appropriate sustainable landscaping practices into our gardens. We design and install rainwater harvest and smart irrigation systems; we employ on-site stormwater management components such as permeable surfaces and bioswales. Finally, we incorporate plantings that will optimize the functionality of these site improvements. These techniques are endorsed by the Low Impact Development Program (LID), LEED, and the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SSI.)

In 2010 we celebrated our 20th year in business. Our cumulative knowledge and experience allows us to design, and deliver in-house, a wide range of products and services. Our installations include imaginative and creative garden structures such as ponds, streams, custom stone fountains, gazebos and fences, walls, terraces, and steps. Our plantings are unusual, exciting and beautiful, and at the same time, manageable and practical. They include woodland gardens, perennial and native plant gardens, water gardens, rock gardens, and drought tolerant gardens. The wide variety demonstrates our extensive plant knowledge. And once a garden installation has been completed, our ongoing landscape management program preserves the original design intent.

A once underused, overgrown and bleak central courtyard in a bustling medical hospital located in the heart of the Sonoma County wine country has been transformed into a therapeutic and healing landscape where patients, family members and hospital staff can find comfort and relaxation within their day. Now, in the healing garden, people can wander along the scented garden paths and relax and enjoy their lunch at one of the café tables and chairs placed throughout the garden, or simply sit and meditate.

To transform the space Landscape Architect Sandra Reed (while with ZAC Architects) worked in collaboration with the Mentoring Program for Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital where staff were selected to participate in a project of their choice as a reward for outstanding service to the hospital. Working closely with this group of various hospital staff members, a design was formulated that achieved their goal of creating a respite from the hectic world of hospital life.

The project required the removal of old concrete pavement and seats and overgrown and declining shrubs. Trees were pruned to reveal their structure and natural beauty which allowed sunlight in to brighten up the space. New, columnar shaped trees with delicate structure and leaves were planted along the perimeter of the space to soften the effect of the concrete architecture and to create a sense of enclosure and movement as the breezes moved through their branches. A series of intertwining paths utilizing different materials including brick, decomposed granite and scented herb groundcover, move the visitor through color progression plantings. The new planting palette now features medicinal and therapeutic herbs and perennials. The color palette progresses in groupings of white flowering plants to muted yellows, pinks, and purples that culminate in reds and bronzes. Additional highlights throughout the garden include a mosaic wall, a hedge alcove with the Virgin Mary, water sculpture, rose court, stone labyrinth, and meeting and relaxation spaces with benches and café tables.

Located on ¼ acre of land in downtown Petaluma, Hospice House of Petaluma has been providing quality, compassionate care to patients and families, as well as grief support and end of life care education, to the community for many years.

The design team charged with developing the landscape for their new site worked closely with a client focus group comprising of a variety of different people including administrators, nurses, bereavement counselors and office staff. To help flesh out the most appropriate, functional and beautiful landscape for everyone involved the group participated in imaging sessions, group sharing exercises, and numerous interactive design workshops.

The layout of the landscape was organized by a series of arcs including engraved brick pathways that lead visitors through a series of outdoor ‘rooms’. Throughout the different garden rooms the design incorporated pervious pavement consisting of decomposed granite with the sub-grade drainage engineered in such a way that directed the run-off toward swales surrounding the overall site. Each garden room was designed so that the visitor would be encouraged to stop and rest or make use of the spaces for quiet meditation, programmed bereavement sessions, or lunching during staff breaks. The overall effect ushers movement throughout differing spaces that collectively contribute to a sensory environment of modulated light, textured materials and flowery scents.

A large portion of the overall site was constrained by the need for space for parking, trash and recycle storage, leaving little room for gardens. To further add to the challenge, the building had a large setback requirement from the street taking away precious space for the garden design. To resolve this the parking lot was designed as a courtyard with a canopy of trees with boxwood hedges defining planting areas within the “court”. It also included a garden pavilion or “gatehouse” disguising itself from the trash. Given the makeover, City planners allowed the parking to be located in the front of the house, within the setback requirement – therefore reserving the side and rear site areas for gardens.

The planting palette in general was selected to provide for sensory perception – a combination of plant texture, color and scents, areas of sun or shade, as well as seasonal variety – including edible fruits and berries.

With over 30 years’ experience, principal, Nancy Minich, HTR, RLA, ASLA, has published articles on healthcare, human ecology and design, and how to work with specific therapeutic populations. She is also a university professor teaching horticultural therapy and is a frequently requested speaker for both healthcare and design affiliated organizations. In addition, she serves on the board of directors of the American Horticultural Therapy Association and provides consulting services. Other professionals with the firm include Donna Dahringer, MLA, MBA, MPP, whose in-depth understanding of the U.S. healthcare system is the product of over 20 years’ experience as a healthcare public policy and business analyst. Her design work focuses on farm and garden wildscaping using ecosystem biomimicry to enhance ecological function and environmental health. The firm has extensive experience collaborating with municipalities, non-profits, and individual landowners and creates inspired designs at scales ranging from master plans to small, detailed garden spaces. NAM staff includes landscape architects and designers, a horticultural therapist, a vocational education teacher, a conservation biologist, and a health care policy planner.

Higbee Park Master Plan Bethlehem, PA

NAM developed the master plan for the 1-acre urban park to accommodate a new Kaboom playground and to incorporate passive recreational areas into the park. Higbee Park was formerly an elementary school until it was razed in the 1970’s and converted to a playground. NAM worked with the Kaboom committee throughout the four month process to incorporate their specific playground planning process into the park master plan. A separate neighborhood meeting was conducted by NAM to present concepts for the park and develop consensus among the residents for the overall park design.

The park master plan strives for a mix of program areas for all ages and abilities and for an increased neighborhood presence. The park layout defines public and private spaces that show signs of neighborhood ownership to deter the vandalism and illicit activities that have occurred historically. Legitimate users experience a sense of welcome with trellises at all three entrances, punctuated by plaza artwork, benches, movable seating, and lawn and landscaped areas. More than 50 percent of the impervious macadam surface was removed and planted with open lawn, and native trees and shrubs. Community gardens and other neighborhood-maintained planting areas are located throughout the park to encourage visibility and ownership of the park. Other site amenities include an accessible path looping through the central and eastern sections of the park. Multipurpose lawns are adjacent to the existing playground and basketball courts and next to the gazebo. A children’s maze winds through the native wildflower meadow to allow children to explore and experience nature. A labyrinth offers mental relaxation and quiet, private space. The plaza area provides much needed shade and passive recreation while it also allows for surveillance down over the playground and lawn areas. All park plantings are native Pennsylvania species and were selected for their ability to increase biodiversity based on D. Tallamy’s twenty most valuable woody plants that support biodiversity in the mid-Atlantic region.

Bucks County Audubon Society Healing Garden New Hope, PA

Since 2014, NAM’s principal had been conducting bimonthly horticultural therapy programs for individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities at Bucks County Audubon Society (BCAS). To further this successful program, NAM developed a grant proposal to design and implement a healing garden at BCAS to address the specific needs of the individuals participating in the program. It was funded by a local private foundation for two consecutive years, and focused on building the healing garden with the individuals in the program and developing a year round program manual of horticultural therapy activities. NAM’s principal utilizes the program as an internship site for horticultural therapy students completing their internship to become registered horticultural therapists.

Delaware Valley University (DVU) Veterans Garden Doylestown, PA

As part of a privately funded grant, NAM worked with Delaware Valley University (DVU) and veterans attending DVU to locate and design a garden to reduce the symptoms of PTSD. Using soft, native flowering trees, shrubs and ground cover, the site was designed to buffer visual and acoustic inputs from passers-by while enhancing sensory stimulation with four seasons of interest. Semi-private spaces were created for additional visual privacy and use by study groups and to reduce some of the symptoms of PTSD such as hyperarousal. In addition, porous brick paving was used to help reduce stormwater runoff and provide DVU and the township with MS4 credits. The garden will be built and enjoyed by veterans and other students at DVU.

Curtis Arboretum Conservation & Landscape Management Plan Cheltenham, PA

Curtis Arboretum is 85 acre township-owned park designed in the 1930’s by the Olmsted Brothers. NAM had a significant role in developing its first management plan, which was funded by PA DCNR and completed in 2016. Responsible for preparing the inventory and assessment of the site, NAM drew attention to its significant natural, cultural, and man-made features, which became the guiding forces in the development of the plan. NAM also identified and evaluated each the tree in the arboretum and designed a brochure highlighting the most significant, in particular, surviving trees planted by the Olmsted Brothers. An Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS) documentation was conducted by NAM and placed in the Library of Congress by the National Park Service in 2017. In addition to these assessments, a collaborative process involving surveys, key person interviews, and steering committee input, resulted in a plan that preserved all the significant features of the site. Guided by stormwater best management practices, the plan also put forth recommendations that addressed Tookany Creek headwater rise at Curtis Arboretum and led to a more sustainable landscape. In 2017, the township was awarded a grant to daylight a first order stream and develop an environmental education area initially designed by NAM in the plan.

School Master Plan Philadelphia, PA

Leading a five member design team from the Community Design Collaborative and working with the Powelton Village Civic Association, NAM developed a master plan for the Powel School in West Philadelphia. The vision for the plan was to engage students at every level - emotionally, socially, physically, and cognitively - while creating a more sustainable site and making the Powel School an even stronger neighborhood asset. The team outlined a strategy for greening the outdated, paved schoolyard in phases, starting with a habitat garden, vegetable garden, and an outdoor classroom. Deliverables included a detailed report outlining the implementation process and detailed illustrations of each specific garden area.

Playwicki Farm Accessible Trail Plan Lower Southampton Township, PA

Funded in part by a PA-DCNR grant, NAM created a 3.2 mile trail system at Playwicki Farm, a 110 acre site made up of important historic and natural resources. The system was designed to accommodate all ages and abilities by providing a selection of trails with various levels of accessibility, including: a paved ADA accessible walking and jogging trail through an orchard and meadow with wide, scenic views; a preservation trail through woodlands with views of wildflowers, a limestone quarry, creek and limekiln; a wetlands trail along the creek; and meadow and wildlife trails. Using GPS and GIS mapping technology, a color coded map was generated to provide visitors information on the location, level of difficulty, and surface material of all the trails making up the system. The paved 1.1 mile walking trail through the meadow area is highly used by residents in the area.

Project management of community service individuals in construction of riparian buffers NAM provided opportunities for youths with behavioral and mental health issues to participate in more than 60 municipal streambank restorations projects over a 15 year period. Youths were from a private organization and court-ordered to perform community service. NAM provided training in specific restoration installation tasks such as measuring areas, removing invasive plants, tree and shrub planting, and installing deer fencing. In addition, individuals were taught to focus on project tasks, and work with others appropriately. NAM staff provided the structured support in conjunction with community service counselors. When individuals returned to their facility, counselors reported attenuation of disruptive behaviors and more engaged group discussion of how to work with others.

Consulting Services NAM also provides consulting services which include: healthcare garden assessment and management; horticultural therapy program development and implementation; staff and volunteer training for allied professionals as well as in-service/workshops; and educational services that include vocational training and development of educational materials, signage, and way-finding systems.

Healing Garden demonstration garden

In 2003, the Fair Oaks Horticultural Center added a new half-acre landscape demonstration garden to their community garden complex. Quadriga’s design for this garden introduces home gardeners to therapeutic and healing plants; as well as water efficiency concepts, native plant use, and sustainable landscaping materials.

An arbor-circled open space serves as classroom for the many instructional events held at the center, and meandering pathways lead visitors past a California native plants garden, a Mediterranean-style garden, perennial flowerbeds, an herb garden, and more. The pathways and other hardscape in the garden display a mix of poured-in-place permeable paving, permeable unit pavers, and colored concrete. The curvilinear low walls allow visitors to interact with both surface-level and raised planting areas, and also serve as seat walls.

This well-executed water efficient landscape, with efficient irrigation throughout, reinforces the teaching and hands-on nature of the Center’s Master Gardener-led classes. The Quadriga team also researched, wrote, and designed the graphics for the demonstration garden’s comprehensive signage.

Sensory Viewing Garden

Quadriga is currently designing a new healthcare campus which includes a medical center, physician’s hospital and medical office building. Crucial to the success of the project is the health and well being of the users- as such much thought is put into the design and placement of public areas, gardens and pedestrian way finding on the campus. Sutter Health is committed to providing buildings that meet or exceed LEED certification. Toward that goal, on site storm water is filtered through more sustainable bioswales and plant materials will be selected specifically for low maintenance, fertilizer and water use.

Set on a 25 acre site adjacent to the Wells Fargo Center, the new hospital will be LEED Certified and the grounds are designed to implement the newest stormwater and water conservation ordinances. On this site, way finding and efficient circulation are critical for hospital visitors and those attending events at the Wells Fargo Center. Vehicular and pedestrian movement was studied intently, with the goal of providing as stress free a visit as possible. Signage and plantings were designed to provide both literal and subliminal way finding clues. Tree and vegetation patterns were designed to help guide the visitor through the site.

Outdoor spaces are designed to meet the needs of the hospital staff as well as patients and visitors. The most reflective space- the viewing garden - has seating walls, water features, gabion walls and visually relaxing proportions. The garden can be entered from a ground floor waiting room and can be viewed through the 2 story glass wall. Other outdoor seating areas have space for small to large groups as well as singular occupants. All of the outdoor spaces have a common vernacular of furnishings and materials.

The design for the grounds reflects Quadriga’s sustainability effort through low water use design, tree preservation, permeable paving, and the first green roof on the UC Davis campus. The Hanley Resource Center is the hub of community outreach for the Hanley Center. The Resource Center holds classes for families and corporations. Several outdoor spaces accommodate a variety of group sizes in a relaxed setting, surrounded by lush plantings. The spaces were carefully detailed to provide shelter and shade including moveable furniture, leafy tree canopies and a trellis with vines for shade and privacy. A large garden area adjacent to a popular inspirational book store encourages reading outdoors, small staff gatherings, and private meetings with a mentor in a restorative setting. A smaller area directly adjacent to classrooms provides a space for students to refresh during break. The site landscaping mitigates traffic noise and bermed plantings of native, xeric and low maintenance plant material distract from a nearby busy road.

Jupiter Medical Center is an acute care hospital. This garden provides a comfortable outdoor alternative to the indoor waiting room. Lush tropical plantings provide a variety of colors and textures, a bubbling fountain provides a pleasant distraction from the stresses associated with acute care. Visitors are protected from sun and rain by a canopy cover, breezes are supplemented by outdoor fans and vending machines provide the opportunity for refreshment.

A series of connected gardens at this 120-bed nursing and rehabilitation facility emphasizes four therapeutic outcomes:

1. Sense of Control - Residents can choose whether to sit in the sun or shade, in groups or alone. Curved pathways unify the outdoor areas and allow residents to choose where and how far into the gardens they wish to explore.
2. Exposure to Nature - A bird garden, raised water garden, and plantings along a large pond provide wildlife habitat. A raised gazebo is oriented to feel the predominant southeast breezes. Eighty-percent of bedroom windows have views to a designed outdoor space for residents unable to venture outside.
3. Exercise - Paths encourage patients and staff to stroll or explore in their wheelchairs. Benches, fountains, and small sculptures provide subtle "goals" to reach.

The Pavilion Butterfly Garden was the first of a series of garden spaces developed at this Nursing Home facility. The butterfly garden featured a trellis, a variety plantings that attract butterflies and a fountain for residents to view from their indoor dining room.

This project at a Rehabilitation and Nursing Home Facility was funded by a local grant to improve water quality. The perimeter of the retention pond was planted with native plantings that provides habitat for waterfowl as well as screens an unattractive parking lot. A spray fountain cools an adjacent patio that is a favorite gathering place for residents to relax and enjoy the wildlife associated with the pond setting.

The idea for a healing garden began with the Director of the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center. She thought that if her patients could look at something other than blank walls, they would be more inclined to exercise. Through a program called Johnny Apple Seed, hospital staff and volunteers donated close to $20,000. Part of this seed money enabled the development of preliminary plans. The plans were mounted on a sign to request further funding for the garden. In 2002, Guy Fiske visited the hospital with his wife, Jacqueline, saw the sign and offered to fund the garden as a Valentine’s gift to her. She accepted. Through the Fiskes’ generosity, not only was the garden construction funded, but an escrow account was established for long term maintenance.

The goal of the Jacqueline Fiske Healing Garden is to foster the physical, mental and spiritual restoration of patients, visitors and staff by distracting from the medical setting. A series of garden spaces connected by paths create a tranquil and sheltered environment. The garden can be seen from inside the Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Center exercise room and offers an alternative outdoor route between hospital units. Seating areas for visitors, patients and staff seamlessly incorporate elements that can be used in rehabilitation therapy.
The garden has several special features. The central focus is a calming pool of water that can be touched and provides a soothing sound. A sculpture of a pair of rising herons by a local artist provides a healing metaphor in the fountain. A transplanted 40’ live oak gives a sense of permanency as well as shade. A large arbor provides a sheltered meeting place and a shaded transition area from indoors. The Garden of Hope is cradled between a meditative lake and cancer center views. A series of spaces accommodate support group gatherings and provide private spaces for quiet reflection amidst a calm lake setting. A Seven-Point Vessica Pattern represents the interconnection of all life and provides a gathering place for meditative exercises. An adjacent shaded patio accommodates outdoor yoga and group meetings. A lush variety of plants creates a sensory environment that attracts wildlife and provides a positive distraction. SPROUT Roy-Fisher Associates facilitated focus groups with patients and staff to identify garden elements that support the emotional needs of individuals with cancer and incorporate the garden into support group programming. Patients preferred two spiritual archetypal landscapes - the promontory (extension) and the harbor (embracing) - which informed the design. Mollie Wilmot Center

A welcoming environment that is attractive and intriguing to children complements this medical facility’s state-funded program for underserved children. Topiary wildlife hangs from trees for patients on gurneys to observe on their arrival. Colorful fish in waves of native grasses greet children from the parking lot. A proposed canopy and shade structure over a play area will provide protection from the sun and rain. A future bubble garden will let play elements "float" to children in wheelchairs in an area that also attracts butterflies with specialized plantings. Raised vegetable gardens will be used in diabetes education classes.

Views from the adjacent lobby attract patients, visitors, and staff outside, alleviating an overcrowded waiting room. A stained glass window provides a nature setting in a quiet room overlooking a trickling water feature in the garden. The connection with nature provides a pleasant distraction from treatments. Ms. Delaney’s projects place an emphasis on the integration of physical form with narratives referencing the currency of a site’s unique historical, cultural, physical and environmental profiles. The text of the terrain is evidenced in the structure of these narratives, crafted by technical skill and quality of materials to create a site which will be read and interpreted by the general public.

Located in a quiet courtyard sheltered by surrounding buildings, this sunny space was designed to provide respite for patients undergoing cancer treatment, and their families. A single brick path meanders through lush, native plantings offering opportunities to be distracted from the sterile setting of this busy medical center.

"Not your typical hospital..." Is how UK Healthcare describes their new Patient Pavilion and featured among their touted assets is the special courtyard off the atrium lobby that offers “a place for tranquility in a lush garden setting with intimate seating areas and benches built into the natural limestone wall." The courtyard is strategically visible from the entry and is part of the "Uniquely Kentucky" branding of the hospital ethos/aesthetic that guided much of the design considerations. The plants are all native, selected and planted to simulate nearby Appalachian forest settings. Wildflowers and spring flowering shrubs are featured, as are the natural rocks which were collected locally.
The courtyard is a therapeutic amenity that is actively used by both visitors and staff. It provides respite and relief from the inevitable pressures of any hospital environment while it makes a strong statement of the hospital's commitment to world class healthcare within reassuringly local surroundings.

Greenwich Hospital
The Carl and Dorothy Bennett Community Garden

The Carl and Dorothy Bennett Community Garden is the culmination of a 10-year building effort by Greenwich Hospital. To make a place for the park and therapy garden, a former wing of the hospital was demolished and the site completely reshaped. The garden welcomes the general public, visitors from the surrounding neighborhood, and patients. It is an outdoor escape, a place for relaxation, contemplation and private conversation.
Features include a verdant landscape, a basin and fountain, a memorial sculpture, plaza paving with donor names, and a generous terrace and pergola adjacent to the new hospital cafe. The garden has been structured to accommodate a number of thematic sub-garden areas as donor opportunities arise. All garden areas have been designed to be fully accessible to the handicapped.

Smilow Cancer Center at Yale-New Haven Hospita

This innovative seventh floor rooftop healing garden provides an outdoor place for relaxation, contemplation or intimate conversation. Patients can meet with family members or health care professionals at one of the seating areas, or visit the garden alone. The resultant garden design was governed more by the needs and desires of cancer patients who favored images of nature, reminiscent of patients' own backyards. The patient-centered design was carefully vetted through meetings with hospital staff, patients and their families.
One can traverse the circulation loop on foot or via wheelchair, experiencing different views of the garden or the city beyond. An unexpected naturalistic, re-circulating stream meanders through the garden, terminating in a reflecting pool. (Images displayed above)

This highly visible garden is designed as a soothing oasis in the heart of the new medical center. It is a focal and focusing space that anticipates the special needs of cancer patients, staff and visitors while providing physical and psychological comfort as well as sensory engagement. It harnesses both the dynamic healing power of natural elements and the familiar elements of the southern New England landscape.
The centerpiece of the design is a sparkling waterfall set against a traditional stone wall. Other garden components include curving paths, intimate gathering spaces for individuals or small groups positioned in sun and shade, café dining, and naturalistic and seasonally varied plantings which feature a wildflower 'meadow' as well as numerous deciduous and evergreen trees. A screened terrace with a shade pergola adjacent to the infusion suites creates a private prospect for patients to receive their treatments in the garden. The splashing water of the fountain and a perimeter screen minimize the distractions of the world outside.

The founder, Jan Satterthwaite, ASLA, L.E.E.D., is an experienced public artist and award winning designer whose interest in landscape architecture has been a lifetime journey that first began with intuition and learning to read place. Later it was leavened by observing the landscape via world travel, freelance work in art as well as experience living with cancer. Her design philosophy is drawn from a dual sensibility—in aesthetics and evidence based design. It is the intersection of the intuitive design process and a sensitivity to individuals with special needs where she finds design can successfully influence environmental change and promote therapeutic health benefits. Having once been a cancer patient, her focus is on the human experience in the landscape, with consistent themes appearing in her design exploration—a profound engagement with site and a modernist faith in the ability of design to transform both site and human response.

VA Puget Sound Fisher House

This transformative garden project was sparked by the energy of the Friends of VA Puget Sound Fisher House™ working in collaboration with students at the University of Washington Dept. of Landscape Architecture Design/Build program. The new landscape is intended to soothe the souls and refresh the spirits of the military and Veteran families staying at Fisher House. The concept design for the garden embodies the “healing journey.” One enters the garden through a threshold of trees, leading to a central plaza. The focal point of the plaza is a “reflection” sculpture composed of metal bands weaving through a bed of ornamental grasses, suggesting the movement of wind. The plaza is surrounded by textured, colorful, and aromatic plants to delight the senses. The pavilion is also marked by metal panels depicting a dove and olive branch motif, referencing peace and healing. An extended woodland restoration garden completes the “healing journey,” symbolizing both spiritual and ecological reclamation.

Healing Garden
Fircrest provides specialized, high-quality personalized service to the most challenged individuals with developmental disabilities. It serves a diverse population of people who are medically fragile, multiply handicapped, and behaviorally challenged. The accessible garden serves a dual purpose: as outdoor therapy and mitigates the displacement that residents undergo to provide a reconnection of a familiar ‘home’ landscape. A production zone, consisting of raised gardening beds and work tables, provide a space for horticultural therapy activities. A play and exploration zone, with a series of sensory paths, a wheelchair chime and interactive game table address cognitive skills. The zones can be chosen by individuals or caregiver groups. For users with low social skills, severe autism for example, parallel play or gardening may represent the highest level of social interaction they can manage. For others, gardening side by side may inspire social interactions not stimulated by more passive activities. In addition to the therapeutic aspects of the garden, a memorial circle was installed to commemorate the memory of residents, parents, guardians and friends who have passed away as well as other life celebrations and memorable events in Fircrest history.

Amongst the hustle & bustle of a busy urban university campus, the design for this project serves a dual purpose:  visitor respite and contemplation combined with an educational experience.  Natural materials have been selected to reflect the local vernacular.  Seating boulders and entry arbors define outdoor rooms that evoke a transition to nature.   They are functional but they also respond to human needs, built on a scale to welcome and reassure.  Plants were chosen with a biblical or historical meaning to serve as a catalyst, inspiring students and guests to reach out to their past.  The design was as much about creating a functional outdoor story room as it was about deepening personal knowledge and attaining peace with oneself.
